Who needs ice to fish in February in Utah? The unseasonably warm weather we have been experiencing recently is putting a quick end to ice fishing, but has also presented other fishing opportunities. While many lakes and reservoirs in Northern Utah have thin, unsafe ice for this time of year, many others are partially or completely ice free. Many boats have been spotted on reservoirs throughout Northern Utah in the past week as fisherman are enjoying the unusual early spring thaw. Deer Creek, Jordanelle, Utah Lake, Pineview, Mantua and many others are ice free and have open boat ramps. Fishermen have reported slow to fair success both trolling and still fishing in most cases, but some have reported good success. Many are still fishing or jigging from boats using the same techniques that you would use while ice fishing. The fish are still pretty lethargic and not real active, but they still need to eat. Patience is the key to finding and catching fish this time of year.
