With winter upon us, the lakes in Utah will soon freeze over and ice fishing will be in full swing. If you or someone you know enjoys fishing during he summer, it is quite possible the gear is put away until spring, but you may want to keep the gear handy and consider taking an outing this year to try ice fishing. Most of the gear you use during the summer can also be used in the winter so you won't blow your budget. About the only thing we use ice fishing that we don't use during the summer is an ice fishing rod which is just a shorter version of your spinning rod. There is no need for casting and a short, compact fishing rod is perfect for jigging. While there are more expensive rod and reels for the seasoned fishermen, this rod and reel is perfect for beginners and make a great Christmas gift. Ice fishing can be fast and furious and can be enjoyed by the whole family. There are also many ice fishing tournaments throughout Utah during the winter with many great prizes given away. More information concerning ice fishing tournaments can be found at various websites, local sporting good stores and from the Utah division of Wildlife Resources.
